Curd Idly (Thayir Idly, Dahi Idly)

Curd Idly which can be easily prepared with idly batter, curd and some simple ingredients. It is the most simple south Indian recipe. Here I gave a stepwise procedure for preparing the recipe with some photos. Curd idly will go well with all types of pickles.





Ingredients:

For Idly: 

  • Idly Batter – 2 cups
  • Onions – 1 finely chopped
  • Oil - 2 tbsp
  • Mustard Seeds – 1
  • Split urad dal – 1 tsp
  • Channa dal / Kadala paruppu – 1 tsp
  • Green Chillies – 2 finely chopped
  • Curry leaves 5 finely chopped
  • Salt to Taste

For Curd:

  • Curd – 2 cups
  • Oil - 2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – ¼ tsp
  • Split urad dal – 1 tsp
  • Channa dal / Kadala paruppu – 1 tsp
  • Green Chillies – 2 split
  • Ginger – 1 tsp crushed & finely chopped
  • Curry leaves 5 nos
  • Coriander leaves finely chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • Carrot – ½ grated for garnish

Medhod:

For Idly:

  • Heat oil add mustard seeds allow it to crackel then add urad dal and channa dal allow it to slightly brown. Then add curry leaves, onions, green chillies and  saute till raw smell of onion goes.
  • Transfer it to the idly batter add salt and mix well. then add it to the idly pan and steam it for 10 to 12 min. take the idly out and let it cool fro 5 min and cut eatch idly in to 4 pieces and set aside.

For Curd:

  • Heat oil, add mustard seed allow it to crackel then add urad dal and channa dal allow it to slightly brown. Then add curry leaves, ginger, green chillies and  saute. Add this to curd.
  • Add chopped coriander leaves, salt and mix well. Place the idly in the bowl and pour the curd in to the idly and let it rest for atleast 15 to 20 min before serving. Garnish with carrot.

Note:

  • I prepared idly using only onions but we can also add vegetables like carrot, beans and cabbage.
  • Use fresh curd for better taste.
