Raw Banana Varuval - Raw Banana Chops Recipe (Spiced Raw Banana Poriyal)

Raw Banana Chops is also called valakkai varuval(Tamil) is a delicious recipe which I usually make for lunch. I explained this recipe here with step by step procedure along with pictures.

This spicy recipe is prepared by adding some masalas which gives you rich flavor and make it very delicious. This can also be prepared without any masalas which I will post soon. Since it is prepared by adding masalas it becomes flavorful and also gets a space in the menu when we prepare lunch for guests.

Ingredients for Raw Banana Chops:


  • Raw Banana – 1
  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  • Onions – 1 finely chopped
  • Turmeric powder a pinch
  • Curry leaves few


To Grind:

  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Onions – 1 finely chopped
  • Pepper -1/2 tsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder – 1 tbsp
  • Red chilli – 1
  • Coriander leaves few
  • Curry Leaves few
  • Cinnamon stick ½ inch
  • Poppy seeds (kasa kasa) – 1 tsp
  • Cloves – 2 no
  • Garlic – 2 cloves
  • Ginger – 1 inch


Method:


  • Remove the outer cover of raw banana and cut it lengthwise. (Always chop into thick lengthwise cuts as this will prevent banana becoming messy while cooking)
  • Add oil, add chopped onions, pepper, cumin seeds and saute until onions becomes slight brown. 
  • Add coriander leaves and curry leaves.
  • Add red chilli and switch off the flame. Then add coriander powder, garlic and ginger.
  • Add cinnamon stick, cloves, poppy seeds and mix well.
  • Grind it to a smooth paste after it is cooled.
  • Add oil in a kadai and add mustard seeds.
  • Add chopped onions, turmeric powder, curry leaves and saute for a minute.
  • Add grind paste and chopped raw banana.Mix well.
  • Add little water and allow banana to cook.
  • After it is cooled and all water are observed switch off the flame.
  • Serve warm for lunch or for roti. 


 Note:


  • Immerse chopped raw banana in water until cooking which prevents it from becoming dark.
