Vazhaithandu Poriyal - Banana Stem Stir Fry

Vazhaithandu Poriyal(Banana Stem Stir Fry) is a healthy recipe which can be prepared easily. Here I am giving the recipe with step by step procedure along with picture. This goes very well with rasam.

It is a good source of fiber, which helps to ease constipation. It helps to relieve stomach pain and helps to keep high blood pressure in control. It also helps to detoxify the body and is good for kidney stones. So include this recipe in your diet atleast once a week.

There are so many recipes we can make from the parts of banana plant which are more healthier recipes too. There are vazhaipoo poriyal, vazhaipoo vadai, vazhaithandu soup etc. I will be posting all these recipe soon.

Ingredients for vazhaithandu Poriyal:

  • Vazhaithandu (Banana Stem) – 2 medium size
  • Small Onions – 5 chopped finely
  • Coconut – 3 tbsp grated
  • Salt to taste

To Temper:

  • Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp
  • Split Urad dal – 1 tsp
  • Green Chillies – 2
  • Curry Leaves – few

Method:

  • First remove the outer layer of banana stem as shown in the figure until you reach the core edible part of the banana stem. Then slice them into rounds and remove the fibers using fingers while slicing into rounds.
  • Cut lengthwise and then small cubes as shown in the photo. After chopped, immerse them in buttermilk until cooking which prevent from turning into black.
  • Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and allow to crackle. Add urad dal and channa dal. Allow it to slightly brown then add green chillies and curry leaves.
  • Add chopped onions and saute for a minute. Add banana stem, salt and mix well then add required water and close the lid allow to cook. After it is cooked completely switch off the flame and add grated coconut. Serve warm.
Serve this with kulambu and rasam of your choice.

Note:

  • You can also soak moong dal in water for 30 minutes and add after adding onions and continue the recipe as I discussed. This also add good taste to the poriyal.
  • You can also add turmeric powder. which also adds yellow color to the dish.
  • You can also add channa dal / kadala paruppu while tempering.
