Thatta Payir Masiyal / Mashed Cowpeas

Thatta Payir Masiyal is very delicious recipe which goes very well with Rice. This can be prepared by some simple steps which I explained below with pictures. Whenever I prepare dish like thatta payir masiyal I will use the stock water to prepare Thatta payir rasam which will also taste delicious.

Ingredients for Thatta Payir Masiyal:

  • Thattapayir – ½ cup
  • Onion – 1 (or) Sambar Onion – 10 nos
  • Tomato - 1 finely chopped
  • Coriander seeds – 1 tsp coresly grinded
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Tamarind - 1 tsp pulp
  • Garlic – 4
  • Curry leaves few
  • Green chilli – 1
  • Red chilli -1

Method:

  • Soak Thatta payir for 30 minutes and pressure cook for 3 whistles or until cooked. If your preparing rasam drain the stock water and keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan add mustard seeds when it is crackling add cumin seeds. Add garlic and saute until it become slightly brown then add green chilli, red chilli, tamarind pulp, curry leaves. Then add chopped onions and saute for two minutes then add coresly grounded coriander seeds and saute for a minute. Then add chopped tomatoes, little salt and saute for two minutes or until tomatoes become soft.
  • Add cooked Thatta payir along with some of its boiled water and allow to cook well for 5 to 6 minutes and switch off the flame. Add to the mixer or hand blender and blend it to smooth paste or the texture you need. I showed the consistency I blended in the picture below.
Serve with hot Rice.

Notes:

  • I prefer to add sambar onion rather than big onion which will enhance the taste.
  • You can also roast thatta payir before cooking until nice aroma comes then wash it and pressure cook. This will enhance the flavor.
