Valaipoo Porriyal - Banana Flower Stir Fry

Valaipoo Poriyal is a very healthy recipe. Valaipoo Poriyal can be prepared by some simple steps and cleaning the valaipoo will be little time consuming. Comparing to its health benefits its worth doing the time consuming cleaning process. Here I am giving you the steps for cleaning and cooking valaipoo poriyal with pictures.

I usually clean the valipoo when I get free time by immersing in the water and adding 2 tbsp of curd or butter milk which will prevent changing of the color and I will cook them when I needed. It goes very well with rasam and hot rice.

Ingredients for Valaipoo Poriyal:


Valaipoo  – 1 no.
Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
Chilli Powder – ½ tsp
Coconut – 3 tbsp grated
Curd or Butter milk – 2 tbsp
Salt to taste

To Temper:


Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp
Split Urad dal – 1 tsp
Channa dal / Kadala Paruppu – 1 tsp
Red Chillies – 2
Curry Leaves – few


 Method:

  • Apply oil in the hand before cleaning Valaipoo as this will prevent the hand from turning black. 
  • Take the Valaipoo and discard the petals and take only the edible part one by one. 
  • Hold the florets bunch and remove two parts as shown in the figure from each florets.
  • Chop the florets after cleaning and immerse in the water mixed with curd or buttermilk.
  • Heat oil in a pan add mustard seeds and allow to crakel, add urad dal, channa dai allow it to slightly brown then add red chilli and curry leaves.
  • Drain the water and add the chopped florets and fry for a minutes.
  • Sprinkle some water and add turmeric powder, close the lid and allow to cook. After it is cooked for few minutes add salt, chilli powder and allow it to cook. After it is completely cooked add grated coconut and switch off the flame and mix well.

Serve hot for Lunch.

Notes:

  • You can also add onions.
