Wheat Rava Upma - Gothuma Rava Upma Recipe

Wheat Rava Upma is a very easy breakfast recipe. If I don't have much time to cook for breakfast or  if I want to cook more than one recipe for breakfast this recipe will come to my rescue. Here I give you this recipe with step by step procedure along with pictures.

I usually have Upma with sugar, pickle, curd or with any curry of my choice. You can make it more healthy by adding vegetables of your choice. I make this recipe without adding tomatoes. You can use it according to your taste preference.

Ingredients for Wheat Rava Upma:

  • Wheat Rava – 1 cup
  • Onion – 1 chopped lengthwise
  • Tomato – 1 finely chopped (optional)
  • Water – 2 cup
  • Salt to taste

To Temper

  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – ¼ tsp
  • Split urad dal – 1 tsp
  • Channa dal / Kadala paruppu – 1 tsp
  • Green Chilli – 1 finely chopped
  • Ginger – 1 inch finely chopped
  • Curry leaves 5 nos

Method:

  • Heat oil in a pan add mustard seeds and allow to crackle. Add urad dal, channa dal allow it to slightly brown then add ginger, green chilli and curry leaves.
  • Then add fried onions and saute for a minute. If adding tomatoes add at this time and again saute for a minute.
  • Add 2 cups of water and salt and allow water to boil.
  • When water starts boiling switch to medium flame and add rava by stirring continuously. Cook by stirring until rava becomes soft and all the water are observed.
  • When the rava is cooked to 95% close the vessel with the lid and switch off the flame (in this stage all the water should be observed). So that remaining 5% will be cooked by its steam this will prevent the rava from becoming overcooked.
Serve with sugar, pickle, curd or any curry

Notes:

  • If you like ginger garlic flavor you can also add ginger-garlic paste instead of ginger.
  • You can add any vegetables of your choice.
  • You can also add 2 tbsp of grated coconut at the end.
  • If the water you added is not sufficient and if rava remains uncooked sprinkle some warm water and mix it well when the stove is still on.
