How to make Sprouts in home - Moong Dal Sprouts

I always make sprouts at home since it is very simple and I assure that homemade sprouts will be very fresh and hygienic as compared to store bought.so here I show stepwise procedure with photos to make sprouts at home. So make your own sprouts in home and enjoy healthy eating.

I always prefer to keep refrigerated until using the sprouts. Care should be taken on water we use and also the time we keep it outside for the sprouts to appear. I usually keep the moong dal in water for overnight and in the morning I drain the water and keep inside the clean hot box or airtight container for whole day and at night I will keep inside the fridge at this moment the small size sprouts will appear. After I keep it in the fridge the sprouts will increase in size to some extent. And I will use that in the morning or within two days. click here for sprouts vegetable salad recipe.

If you are not confident enough to use raw just wash it in cold water before using or blanch it in the warm water. It may destroy some vitamins but it will not destroy all the benefits. It is better to do this to destroy bacteria. If some recipes call for sprouts like soups, gravies etc add the sprouts just before switching of the flame to prevent the destruction of vitamins. You can make sprouts from different beans (mochai, channa etc). The procedure will be the same but each bean take different time for the sprouts to appear.

I came to know that bean sprouts contain vitamin A,B,C,B1,B6, & K. In addition, sprouts also contains iron, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, potassium etc. It also contains oxygen which increase the blood flow in the body, boost immune system etc. To know more about health benefits of sprouts click here

Ingredients:

Green Moong Dal (pachapayaru) – ½ cup

You can use any type of bean for sprouting.

Method:

  • Wash the bean well two to three times.
  • Soak it in water for whole night. Fill the water one inch above the bean. In the morning you will find little slit in the bean. Strain the bean using muslin cloth or strainer. Make sure all the water gets strained.

  • Keep it in the hot box or air tight box for a whole day. At night open and see whether you are satisfied with the length of the sprouts if yes shift it to the fridge, if not dont disturb the sprouts and keep it covered for some more hours.

Note:

  • Use good quality of beans for good sprouts.
  • Use clean water.
  • After you shifted to the refrigerator the sprouts will still grow little more in length.
  • Dont keep the sprouts out for a longer duration. Its freshness may get lost.
